Founder Success Story QnA
How old are you and tell me a little bit about yourself?
Well, I am Umar. I’m 17 years old. I should be 18, but I was born in December, so I have to wait until the end of the year to have my birthday.
Where in the world are you?
I’m from Sri Lanka.
So you joined the real world when you were 15?
Yeah. So, I joined the real world when I was 15 at this point. I joined on the exact date of March 28th, 2023.
What made you join the real world first of all? And how were you doing in school at that time?
To be honest, I was not doing good at school. Not because I couldn’t, but I had this feeling even before the real world about why you should go to school. I was seeing people around me going to school for years and years and then ending up with low-paying salaries and debt.
Can you tell me about your family background and how you got into business?
My dad didn’t take the traditional path either. He went the hustler business path. To begin my story, my family was in debt. Basically, my dad had a car dealership where he imported vehicles from Japan and sold them here. But due to a sudden change in rules and also due to COVID, we took huge hits. We fell into debt, and due to COVID, we had to shut down the business completely. At that point, we were running through the only money we had, and we eventually had to sell our house. Right now, we are in a rental house.
What business did you start with your dad?
I joined the real world in March, and my dad had a kind of side business at that point. He was trying a lot of different businesses because we were in debt, and he was trying to do something to get us out of there. Eventually, he found a good enough business path, which is basically to get high-end machinery imported from China and then sell it here. So we are like an industrial machinery dealer.
What was the revenue before you started marketing?
Before I applied marketing to my dad’s business, we were doing like $1,000 to $2,000 a month in revenue. The reason I don’t have a specific number is because before I worked with him, we didn’t have any software to track the revenue. He was just doing it as is.
What happened after you applied marketing?
We have data from January 1st, 2024, when I applied the marketing. Within two to three days, the calls started coming in like crazy, and my dad was eventually like, “Can you turn the amount of leads that’s coming in down a little bit?”
How much revenue did you reach after 3 months?
Fast forward 3 months later, we actually reached $15,000 per month in revenue. We started the business where we kept the inventory in our rental house, and customers would come to our house, and we would do the deal there.
How has the business grown since then?
After 3 months, since our business was booming very fast, we moved into a four-floor building that we rented out. In one year, since we started on January 1st, 2024, it’s been 1.5 years since we started marketing the business. Before I worked on that business, he was running it for 3 to 4 months, so it’s almost 2 years now. We have generated, in total, like $300,000 in revenue. Within this 2025 year, we have generated $100,000 in revenue, and right now, we have three staff working with us, and we’re planning to get more staff because the workload is huge.
Did you drop out of school?
Yeah, I dropped out last year, at the end of 2024. I did the ordinary level examination, and then dropped out.
When did you join the real world and start marketing for your dad’s business?
I joined the real world in March 2023. My dad started the business by himself at the end of 2023, and I started working on his business and putting effort into that business at the start of January 2024.
Which campus did you join in the real world?
I tried all of them, and the one that interested me most was the copywriting campus, so I went along and did that.
How quickly did you see results after starting Facebook ads?
I worked on the projects for about one week. It was basically Facebook ads. He was not doing Facebook ads; he’s old school, so he doesn’t know anything about that. My dad is 60 at this point. He was doing marketing in a marketplace website. In our country, the market doesn’t know that there’s this type of solution. So marketplace is basically if the market is aware of the solution and they go to search. Facebook is where you target people who are not aware of the solution. So I went with Facebook ads, and within the first initial day of launching the ads and the second day, about halfway through the second day, there were no calls. My dad was doubting if it was going to work, and on the third day, the phone started ringing to a point where he said, “Can you reduce the level of leads coming in?”
How quickly were customers buying after getting leads?
Within weeks, some customers come straight up, call, and raise a location. They talk about the product and ask for the location, and the next day they come and buy on the spot. So it’s almost instant. Some of them are like the next day, some of them take up to a week because they have to get approval from the government for extra funds. But it wasn’t a month or two months or three months. It was like some were instant, some were the next week.
What changes have you seen in your life since joining the real world?
Changed a lot because it gave me a lot of perspective shifts, a ton of them. Physically, mentally, planning stuff, how to achieve certain goals—almost everything. Physical strength has increased a lot. I’m shredded right now. It’s changed my mindset, and one of the biggest changes I’ve seen is the way I react to things. I’m less emotional than back then. There’s more process that goes into it.
What was the hardest part of your journey?
I think the hardest part is just putting the work in every day, especially the days where you don’t see the results. You mathematically have planned it out, it would work out, but still your brain is like there’s no results. Especially when starting out, but now my brain is kind of used to long-term results. There’s always going to be ups and downs. The hardest part is when you have faced a huge growth, and the growth is not always going to be going up. At some point, it’s going to slow down, and that’s when your brain starts to panic: “Why is it slowing down? I’m doing everything I can.”
Can you tell me about any doubts, failures, turning points, and your biggest breakthrough?
In terms of doubt, there were a few doubts here and there, but overall, I was kind of arrogant. I had that arrogant belief in myself that I’ll somehow make this happen. Even before the real world, that’s why I didn’t perform well in school. In terms of doubt, I don’t think I had many. I had a few here and there, but in my mind, this is the only option I had because I already gave up on school, so I can’t go back. Some of the biggest doubts were whenever I had done everything on my end that I could, and things didn’t go as planned. Back then, I was more emotional about it, but right now, when things don’t go right, it’s like I must have done something wrong here. It’s more of a logical approach to the whole situation.
Do you have other businesses?
Not only on my dad’s business, but I have also worked on an e-commerce business too. And recently, since I’m in the copywriting campus, I closed a client—a luxury real estate agency—very recently.
How has your family’s life changed?
My family was living a good life back then. My dad was doing car dealership, which is a high-paying business. Even when we went into debt, my dad didn’t want to take the good things out of our life. He was spending on us like there was no issue in life. But you can see through that when your dad is struggling; you can see it in his face. So it wasn’t really a big change because even when my dad was on a very low financial point, he was spending a lot on us as if he had money. My family, especially my mom and sisters, failed to see the change; they think we’ve always been like this.
What’s the most significant thing you’ve learned?
Every time I was emotional about stuff, it doesn’t change anything. And when you’re emotional, other people can get control of you. When you’re emotional, you’re like the first person in any games. When you’re logical, you’re from a third-person perspective; you’re looking down at yourself. So I think that’s the biggest shift that has happened in this whole journey.
What would you say to people who claim the real world is a scam?
To be honest, I don’t say anything to them. I just look at them. There are some people who, whenever I say about the real world, they’re like, “No, you’re going to find out he’s scamming you.” I don’t say anything back; I just shut my mouth and focus on myself. The proof is in the pudding. At this point, it’s not about not enough proof; it’s like they’re arrogant to not take the action. There are so many interviews like this on the website. I think it’s more than a thousand. You can see everywhere people are saying the real world works. If they still say it’s a scam, I don’t know what to say; it’s not even worth talking to them.
What are your plans for the next six months to a year?
In terms of planning, I want to improve and include real world people’s ideas too, but most of the time, I have planned it myself. I get inspirations from other people’s plans when they post their own plans, and I mix and match with my own plan. Most of the planning structures, how to implement the plan, all those methods and strategies were from the real world, specifically from Professor Andrew from the copywriting campus.
What specific plans do you have for your dad’s business?
For my dad’s business, we have moved out to an office. The building is four floors, and at the current stage, we have only rented the ground floor and the first floor. Recently, the business has been booming really well, and due to that, we ran out of inventory. So we had to buy a whole 40-foot container full of inventory, and it’s on the way. Also, we are renting out the whole building—the third and fourth floor.
Do you have plans to expand internationally?
First, we are going to plan to expand to the UK. Maybe within two to three years, we might be able to expand to other countries too, but our first target is the UK. And the e-commerce business I talked about is also at the point where we are expanding to the UK. I did a whole rebranding, increased the price, made the brand look like a premium brand, and then the revenue started skyrocketing.
What is your target revenue for the end of 2025?
I’m aiming for at least $100,000 in a month overall in my e-commerce business and my dad’s business at the end of 2025.
Does your brother help with the business?
Of course, he’s helping. He mostly does in-person sales and stuff, management, and even when I create marketing stuff, I get approval from him, his ideas, and then before we launch.
